To Monitor or Not to Monitor your Security System

When you choose to have your security system monitored, your system is programmed to contact our monitoring station in emergencies and communicate the type of emergency, and which sensor detected it.

Some alarm companies insist that your system be monitored, or even worse require you to sign long term contracts (5 years or more).  We give you the option of having your system monitored, or having it sound the siren only to alert you (if you are home) or your neighbours.

Unmonitored Systems

The common reason why people choose not to have their system monitored is:

I live in a rural area, and police response is poor so it won't matter anyway.

It is true that by just having a system installed and a warning sticker on the door, you have already greatly reduced the likelihood of a break-in.  So if preventing the theft of your 'stuff' is the only reason you have purchased a security system, an unmonitored system will be fine.

Monitored Systems

However there are many benefits to having your system monitored:

Most insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance if your system is monitored (usually 10 - 15 %).
If your premise is broken into and you are out of town, or worse, if your cottage is broken into in the winter, you and the police will be notified so you can check for damage and make sure the place is once again secure.
If your system has fire protection, it will 'call for help' and notify the fire department regardless of whether or not you're home.  That means that if you are home, all you have to worry about is getting out (according to your fire escape plan) because help will be on it's way.  If you happen to be away at the time, this could prevent all your belongings and memories from going up in smoke.
If you have a water problem in your basement, a monitored system with a 'water level sensor' will alert you if your sump pump fails and give you time to fix the problem before your basement floods.
A monitored system with a temperature sensor installed can notify you of heating system failure.  This is valuable if you travel frequently or for long periods - especially in the winter.  Calling a repairman to fix the furnace is a lot cheaper and less hassle than coming home to burst pipes.
A monitored system can notify you when power outages occur, giving you time to look after your freezer or water pump in a prolonged outage.
A monitored system along with a panic pendent for your neck can give a senior the ability to summons medical help if they need it.
